About Museums in Tokyo
Museums in Tokyo is an independent guide to the city's museums and the tickets and tours worth booking for them. We visit, compare hours and prices, and sort everything by theme so you can plan a museum day without twenty open tabs. Start with our full guide to the museums of Tokyo or jump straight to the side-by-side Tokyo museum comparison.
Why we built this site
Tokyo's museums are scattered across booking platforms, official sites in Japanese, and outdated blog posts. The practical facts, what a ticket really costs, which day a museum closes, whether the Ghibli Museum has any tickets left, take real digging. We do that work and keep it in one place: opening hours, admission prices, the nearest station, what you will actually see inside, and which guided tours genuinely add something.
We also tell you when not to book a tour. Some museums here are best wandered alone for the price of a door ticket, and we say so.
How we choose what to feature
We don't list everything. Museums earn their place by being worth a traveler's limited time, and tours meet a consistent baseline:
- Licensed operators with strong verified reviews
- Clear, honest inclusions, admission tickets stated plainly
- Fair prices against the museum's own door ticket
- Free cancellation wherever the operator offers it
How we make money
This site is free to use. When you book through a link here, we may earn a small commission from the booking platform, at no extra cost to you. It never changes what you pay, and it never determines the order or rating of anything.
Our recommendations reflect verified reviews, real value, and what suits different travelers, not commission rates.
About the author
Yuki Morishita is a Tokyo-based arts and culture writer who has spent years in the city's museums, from the National Treasure rooms of Ueno to the smallest shitamachi collections east of the river. She checks hours, prices and closing days against official sources before anything is published, and revisits the major museums every season. When something changes, like the Edo-Tokyo Museum's 2026 reopening, the page changes with it.
